Gastro-Esophageal Reflux
What Is Gastro Esophageal Reflux
Gastro-Esophageal Reflux (GER) is a common condition in babies, which occurs when the contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus. This happens because the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscular valve at the base of the esophagus that normally keeps the stomach contents from flowing back up, is not yet fully developed in babies.
GER in babies usually starts within the first few weeks of life and tends to improve by the time the baby is around six months old as the LES strengthens. It is more common in premature babies and babies with certain medical conditions such as cerebral palsy or Down syndrome.
Symptoms in Children/ Babies
These symptoms can be distressing for both the baby and the parents, but most babies with GER do not require treatment and will outgrow the condition.
Causes
Generally, the valve in the body that prevents reflux remains relatively loose in children compared to adults. Thus, causing the reflux motion. This usually develops as the child grows up.
When Must You Visit A Doctor?
If you observe recurrent symptoms of GER or notice a lack of growth as per age, schedule an appointment with us. Other symptoms that you need to look out for include the following:
However, suppose GER is causing significant discomfort or interfering with the baby's growth and development. In that case, the doctor may recommend antacids or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce stomach acid. Feeding changes may also be recommended, such as smaller and more frequent feedings and keeping the baby upright for at least 30 minutes after feeding. It is also advised to get your child checked every year. Routine check-ups are a must to track growth & development for the child's overall well-being.
It is important to note that while GER is a common condition in babies, it differs from Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), a more severe form of reflux requiring medical treatment. If you have any concerns about your baby's symptoms, it is always best to consult with your paediatrician. If required or concerned, Kindly make an appointment with us at 02 8069 2127.
